EVOLUTION of the SPORTSTER - by Robert K. Smith It all started in 1952, when the 45-inch Twin (called the Model K, Sportster’s ancestor) was introduced to the motorcycle world. The 45-inch WLA models of World War II were replaced by the 45 cubic inch side valve. Eventually the K model would become an overhead valve model due to the success of the 61 cubic inch. Before making the Sportster, however, the K became the KH and was bored to 55 cubic inches. The overhead valve was a logical development because of its higher horsepower output.[read more]
